Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: $499.99 iPad Rival Gets Google Play
Amazon has unveiled the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, a $499.99 aluminum tablet that runs Android with the full Google Play Store, has Alexa+ built in and comes with an optional snap-on keyboard and pen. It leads a new three-model lineup announced on Thursday, October 8, 2026, which drops the Fire name Amazon has used for its tablets for about 15 years. Orders opened the same day, and the tablets ship on October 14 in the United States. Tech outlets are already calling it Amazon's most direct challenge yet to Apple's iPad.
What happened
In a post on Amazon's official news site, devices vice president Kevin Keith introduced three models: the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the Alexa Tablet 11 and the Alexa Tablet 8. Amazon says all three have aluminum unibody designs, high-resolution displays and Alexa+ built in. They also run Android and come with access to Google Play, so users can install apps such as YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs alongside Amazon's own Prime Video, Kindle, Audible and Amazon Music. Amazon calls the 12 Pro "the most advanced tablet we've ever built."
That marks a clear break from the past. Amazon's Fire tablets ran the company's own Fire OS and relied on the Amazon Appstore. An Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch that the Alexa Tablets are an all-new product line with new hardware and a new operating system, not a rebrand of Fire tablets. Panos Panay, Amazon's hardware and Alexa chief and the former head of Microsoft's Surface line, told The Verge that "Google Play was a necessity, end of story."

The 12 Pro's hardware
Amazon says the 12 Pro is 6.5mm thin and has a 12-inch, 280 PPI display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Amazon has not named the chip, describing it only as a 4nm 8-core processor with up to 16GB of RAM. MacRumors, The Verge and GeekWire all identify it as MediaTek's Dimensity 8400. Amazon claims nearly three times faster processing and nine times faster graphics than any tablet it has shipped before. It also lists quad Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E and up to 16 hours of video playback, Amazon's longest yet.
Nanomatte is the headline feature. Amazon says it worked with Corning on a photolithography process that etches a texture into the glass lined up with the pixels underneath. Conventional matte screens are sandblasted, which scatters light unevenly. MacRumors points out that Apple's comparable nano-texture glass is only offered on 1TB or 2TB iPad Pro models, while Amazon's matte option is available on the 128GB model.
Keyboard and pen
Amazon says the Pro Keyboard attaches magnetically with no Bluetooth pairing, and MacRumors reports that it includes a trackpad. The Pro Pen is a USI 2.0 active pen with 4,096 pressure levels, tilt detection, magnetic docking and wireless charging. GeekWire notes that a Nanomatte 12 Pro with both accessories comes to nearly $790, and that the keyboard-and-pen setup "will look familiar to Surface Pro users."
Alexa+ that can see your screen
Users can say "Alexa" or tap an "Ask Alexa" button to bring up the assistant without leaving their current app. A feature called On-Screen Intelligence lets Alexa read what is on the display. In one Amazon example, Alexa adds every date from a game schedule to your calendar and flags conflicts. Live sessions allow a continuous back-and-forth conversation without repeating the wake word. Amazon says screen-reading features are off by default, require a deliberate opt-in and show a visual indicator whenever Alexa can see the screen. According to MacRumors, tablet-only Alexa+ access is included, but using Alexa+ across other Alexa devices requires Prime or a separate Alexa+ subscription.
Kindle mode and the smaller models
Opening the Kindle app switches the tablet into a reading mode that silences notifications and reduces blue light, with battery life of up to 20 hours, Amazon says. The Alexa Tablet 11 has an 11-inch 2.5K display at 90Hz and up to 15 hours of video, while the Alexa Tablet 8 has an 8.7-inch screen, weighs 329 grams and is rated for up to 14 hours of video. Amazon also announced new Amazon Kids Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes, starting at $229.99 and $329.99, which come bundled with a kid-proof case and a year of Amazon Kids+.
Why it matters
- A direct shot at the iPad: MacRumors notes that the $499.99 12 Pro costs less than Apple's $749 11-inch iPad Air while offering a larger screen and higher refresh rate. The Alexa Tablet 11 also starts below the $449 entry-level iPad, although Apple's base model includes 128GB of storage.
- Amazon is giving up some control: For more than a decade, Amazon sold cheap Fire tablets and counted on owners buying content from its stores. GeekWire points out that by adding Google Play and raising prices, Amazon is loosening that control. Amazon's own services still lead the home screen.
- Alexa+ gets a bigger stage: The tablets put Amazon's generative AI assistant at the center of a general-purpose computer. The Verge notes that its own testing of Alexa+ has been less impressive than Amazon's pitch, so how well On-Screen Intelligence works in daily use is still an open question.
- The Panay factor: GeekWire calls this the biggest change to Amazon's tablets since Panay joined from Microsoft in 2023. The keyboard-and-pen 12 Pro echoes the Surface Pro he once led, just as Microsoft launched its own new $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra this week.
What's next
The first units reach US buyers on October 14, and independent reviews should test whether the Dimensity 8400 chip, which The Verge describes as merely "fine," keeps up with multitasking, and whether the Nanomatte display lives up to Amazon's claims. The Verge reports that Panay called the screen the one feature the team refused to compromise on.
As for Fire tablet owners, an Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that Fire tablets will keep working, that customers keep access to their apps and content, and that Amazon will provide at least four years of support "after the last Fire tablet we sell." Amazon has not said when it will stop selling Fire tablets. The launch also lands days before Apple's own October 13 product event, which The Verge reports is expected to focus on smart home devices.
