GPT-6 Hits ChatGPT: Intelligent UI Makes Answers Interactive
GPT-6 is now arriving in everyday ChatGPT conversations, and it brings a new feature called Intelligent UI that can answer with charts, tappable buttons and small working tools instead of plain walls of text. OpenAI announced the rollout on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with GPT-6 Sol powering the update for paying subscribers and GPT-6 Luna reaching Free and Go users from Thursday. OpenAI pitches the release as a way to bring its newest model generation to far more people, pointing to the more than 1.2 billion who it says use ChatGPT every week.
What happened
In its official announcement, OpenAI said GPT-6 with Intelligent UI started rolling out globally on Wednesday to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise customers in the Chat tab, with Free and Go tiers following the next day. Paid tiers run on GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna, and OpenAI says both models are tuned for everyday conversation. TechCrunch published its report at 11 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday, after OpenAI staff demonstrated the feature on a call with journalists. Enterprise access depends on workplace admin settings, and OpenAI says the models behind its Work and Codex products are not changing as part of this release.
These are not the first GPT-6 models. OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra on September 3, first for a limited set of organizations, with paid ChatGPT plans promised access over the following days, a launch Engadget covered the same day. According to an update note on that page, OpenAI then added GPT-6 Sol and Luna on September 22, but only in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API, with a note that they were "not yet available in Chat." Wednesday's release closes that gap. Separately, a planned GPT-6.1 Astra update was shelved over safety concerns, as we reported in September.

Key details
What Intelligent UI does
OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to build each reply from text, visuals and interactive elements, and to decide how they fit together based on the question. Responses can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and other interactive pieces that work inside the conversation. When a short text answer is the most useful reply, the company says ChatGPT can still give one, and no special prompt is needed.
- Everyday plans: OpenAI's examples include timings for a Sunday roast placed next to the recipe and road trip stops shown on a map.
- Learning: Explanations of topics such as the central limit theorem, GDP and the Monty Hall problem let users change inputs and see what happens. The Verge describes a demo diagram of a seven-speed bicycle with buttons that highlight each part, plus a Mahjong guide that sorts tiles into categories.
- Tools on request: Users can ask for a savings calculator, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, or a game to play in the chat.
- Live demo: According to TechCrunch, product manager Aarush Selvan asked ChatGPT to explore how an airplane wing generates lift, and it quickly produced several diagrams.
Answers that start sooner
GPT-6 can also start answering while it is still thinking, OpenAI says, adding detail across several partial responses instead of making users wait for its reasoning to finish. In OpenAI's own testing, GPT-6 Instant began answering questions that need web search 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. OpenAI also says GPT-6 makes better decisions about when to search the web. These are company figures and have not been independently verified.
Plans and settings
OpenAI's help center says GPT-6 replaces the "Latest" option in the model menu and is not labeled Sol. GPT-6 Sol powers the Instant, Medium, High and Extra High thinking levels, while the Pro level uses GPT-6 Pro, which runs on GPT-6 Astra and is offered on the Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise plans. According to the plan table, Plus includes Medium and High but not Extra High. Intelligent UI does not appear at the Pro level, has no separate usage quota, and is not supported in the older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows, where OpenAI points users to the web version. Older models are not being retired.
Why it matters
- A different-looking ChatGPT: Selvan told TechCrunch that ChatGPT "has predominantly been a text-based interface," and this update shifts more answers toward visuals people can tap and adjust.
- Free users are included: Because GPT-6 Luna is going to Free and Go users, the new interface is not limited to paying customers. TechCrunch suggests the visuals could make ChatGPT more accessible and help it reach a wider audience, though OpenAI did not say so directly.
- Competition with Google: Wired notes that the feature resembles the "generative UI" results Google introduced in Search earlier this year, a sign that the two rivals are moving in a similar direction.
- Hands-on impressions: In a pre-launch test, Wired's reporter built an apartment affordability calculator with sliders and a seat-map explorer for comparing airline cabins. Wired also warns that generative interfaces could unsettle designers as AI shapes more of what software looks like.
- Safety claims: OpenAI says GPT-6 resists attempts to bypass its safety training better than before, especially attacks that build over several turns, and that its safety training was updated to guard against misuse involving cyberattacks, biological threats and violence. Details are in the system card.
What's next
The main date to watch is Thursday, October 8, when OpenAI says the rollout expands to Free and Go users. OpenAI's help center says that if GPT-6 does not show up in the model menu, it may simply not be available for that account yet. At the time of writing, parts of OpenAI's help page still described GPT-5.6 Luna as the default for Free and Go users, so that page may change as the rollout moves forward.
OpenAI admits there is "still work ahead" to improve the model's design judgment and expand what it can create. The company's longer-term pitch is bold: "Instead of people adapting to software, software will adapt to people," its announcement says. Independent testing will show whether the interactive answers are accurate and useful outside OpenAI's own demos, and whether people actually want this many visuals in their chats.
If they do not, there are controls. TechCrunch says users can dial the visuals back, much like other personality settings, and Wired says people can simply ask ChatGPT to generate fewer of them. On the web, the help center points to a Layout and visuals setting, though it warns that some visual elements may still appear.
FAQ
When do free ChatGPT users get GPT-6?
OpenAI says the rollout reaches Free and Go users starting Thursday, October 8, 2026, one day after paid plans. Those tiers get GPT-6 Luna, which OpenAI describes as tuned for everyday conversation. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 Sol.
What is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?
Intelligent UI is a GPT-6 capability that lets ChatGPT mix text with diagrams, charts, forms, tappable buttons and small tools such as calculators, bill splitters or games, all inside the chat. According to OpenAI, the model decides when visuals help and when plain text is enough.
Can I turn off the visuals in ChatGPT?
Partly. On ChatGPT for the web, OpenAI's help center says you can turn off Layout and visuals in Settings to reduce visual elements, but some may still appear. Wired reports you can also ask ChatGPT to generate fewer visuals.
