iPhone Duo Preorders: $1,999 Foldable Now Ships in January 2027
Apple's iPhone Duo went up for preorder on Friday, October 16, 2026, and within about half an hour every model on Apple's US online store was quoting delivery in late January 2027. Apple's first foldable iPhone starts at $1,999, and preorders opened at 5 a.m. PT (8 a.m. ET). The phone officially launches on October 23. Delivery estimates slipped from December into the new year so quickly that The Verge headlined its report "iPhone Duo orders are already delayed into 2027." Here's what happened, what the phone costs, and how you might still get one sooner.
What happened
Apple confirmed the timing in an October 15 Newsroom update: preorders on apple.com and in the Apple Store app from 5 a.m. PT on Friday. Shoppers could save their choices to a shopping bag before 9 p.m. PT Thursday for one-click checkout. Apple first unveiled the phone on September 9 at its "Surprise and shine" event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. In its launch press release, Apple CEO John Ternus called it "the most transformational change to iPhone since the original."
Friday morning, demand ran straight into limited stock. Macworld's live blog reported that Apple's preorder page went live at 8:07 a.m. ET, and the first unlocked 256GB orders it saw were already quoting December 1–8. By 8:21 a.m. ET every model showed December 15–22. About half an hour after preorders began, all colors, capacities and carriers were quoting January 25, 2027. MacRumors also reported a January 25 estimate for every configuration on Apple's US store.

Key details
iPhone Duo prices and release dates
According to MacRumors and 9to5Mac, US prices are:
- 256GB: $1,999
- 512GB: $2,199
- 1TB: $2,599
- 2TB: $3,199
There are two colors, star white and night sky. Apple lists monthly options too, including $83.29 a month over 24 months and leases through its Klarna-run Apple Upgrade program from $57.99 a month. The official release date is Friday, October 23, in the US and more than 70 other countries and regions, including the UK, Canada, Germany, France, India and Japan. Another 28 countries follow on October 30. Apple's iPhone Duo Case costs $79 and the Folio with Kickstand costs $129.
How far shipping slipped around the world
- US: The Verge saw late-January delivery dates for every configuration less than an hour after preorders opened.
- Canada: MobileSyrup reported January 26 for every color and storage option on Apple Canada's site.
- UK and Germany: Macworld's David Price reported December 14–21 for a white 256GB model in the UK at one point, with German dates in mid-December.
- Other iPhones: TechRadar said the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max were showing estimates from late October to mid-November, depending on configuration.
The rollout wasn't smooth, either. TechRadar said many buyers reported Apple Store apps that were at times unresponsive or failed to remember their saved "get ready" choices. Before the store opened, Macworld spotted a new Apple waiting-room message: "Please stay on this page until we can bring you in for pre-order."
Resellers moved fast
MacRumors reported that an eBay listing for a 2TB night sky iPhone Duo was marked sold at $5,000, roughly $1,800 above Apple's price. A separate "confirmed pre-order" for a 1TB model was marked sold at $4,400. Macworld separately spotted a 1TB model that sold for $3,777.77.
What you get for $1,999
According to Apple, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display, roughly passport-sized when closed. It opens to a 7.6-inch inner screen that Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's display, and open, it's the thinnest iPhone ever. It runs on the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, with a vapor chamber for cooling and one battery on each side. Apple rates it for up to 24 hours of use when both screens are used equally. The phone uses Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID, has a grade 5 titanium frame, is rated IP68, and works only with eSIM worldwide. The cameras are a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x telephoto, a 48MP Ultra Wide, and a FaceTime camera hidden under the inner display. Apple says Apple Pencil support is coming later this year.
Why it matters
- It's Apple's biggest new iPhone design in years. TechRadar compared the rush to the iPhone X and the Jet Black iPhone 7, and said a January ship date points to "serious interest" before most people have even tried the phone.
- Demand or supply? Probably both. AppleInsider pointed out that Apple never says how many units it has ready on day one, and that Apple is believed to have built fewer Duos than usual after reports of manufacturing delays. MobileSyrup noted earlier reports of production problems limiting launch supply, and TechRadar thinks the delays are likely a mix of high demand and limited supply.
- It's an AI showcase, too. Apple pitches the Duo's big inner screen as a home for Siri AI, the new Apple Intelligence-powered Siri that's rolling out in beta in English with iOS 27. You can keep Siri open next to an app and ask about what's on screen. A Siri mode in Camera answers questions about what's in front of you, and an on-device "Smart Take" feature automatically snaps photos when people pose. Apple's footnotes say Siri AI won't be in China and won't be available at first on iOS in the EU. We covered Siri AI on Apple's home devices in our Apple TV 4K report.
What's next
The main date is Friday, October 23, when the first preorders arrive and the iPhone Duo goes on sale in stores. The Verge notes that Apple usually keeps some units for in-store sales, so walking into an Apple Store may be faster than ordering online. Macworld says Apple's site now reads "Check back for availability on 10.24," which suggests stores will get limited stock each day. Carriers are another route: as of 8:50 a.m. ET, Macworld saw T-Mobile quoting late October and AT&T and Verizon quoting November, though it cautioned it couldn't confirm how accurate those estimates were. Macworld also thinks many orders will probably ship before the quoted January date as Apple ramps up production. Apple hasn't said how many units it has available.
